In this workshop, you will:

  • Refine your writing skills

  • Learn & practice how to use the tools of writing effectively

  • Have 1-to-1 coaching on how to look at your work constructively and prepare it for feedback

  • Learn how to look at your work critically to refine your writing into what you want it to be

  • Gain feedback on your work

  • Be a positive part of the writing community and champion your peers' successes

An in-depth workshop that begins with studying a particular tool aspect of the writing craft and ends with reviewing your and/or others' work.

Each session will have instruction on a specific topic, such as metaphor, POV, scene, etc. We will look at examples, discuss the uses, and have time for writing and practice. Then, we will focus on peer work and provide feedback. This will not be your typical feedback workshop.

Have you ever received feedback on your work that didn’t answer any of your questions? Have you ever received feedback that didn’t benefit you or your writing? Did you get feedback that just felt off the mark, like the reader didn’t get it? None of that will happen here.

If you have a piece that you would like feedback on, you will submit it to the instructor a week before class. The instructor will work with you to develop a couple of paragraphs that provide context to your work and instructions to the reader.

You will explain:

  1. What you want the piece to accomplish

  2. The strengths of the piece

  3. What you need help with

Doing this ensures:

  1. You get the information you need to move forward

  2. The reader understands the goal of the piece so they can provide relevant feedback

  3. You learn how to look at your work with an editorial eye
